Black Saturday at O’Leary’s

It’s been a long, hard road trip this summer. We slaved across Iowa and western Illinois, learning about intradealer rivalries in the Harley-Davidson world and the terrible fashion errors that can result. It was horrible, draining, I tell you.

And so it is with much relief and joy that I report to you today we are RETURNING, MOST TRIUMPHANTLY, to our south side roots.

Join us for a few hours of post-shopping beer drinking and hell raising.

Gig this weekend: Poopy’s

Late breaking news: we will be continuing our Mississippi Valley 2010 Fall Tour this Sunday, September 5, at Poopy’s in Savanna, IL. 1pm - 5pm. This place really has it all, according to their website:

Given that, it’s possible we’ll never come home, so do make the effort to get out there and see this epic show.

The Girl in the Lime Green Top

It’s often the case when we play outdoor summer festivals that the colors of the crowd swirl together into a ruddy brown stew. Everyone’s tan, to start with, and then the heat and humidity seem almost to coax the dirt up from between the blades of grass and onto the bodies and clothes we see from the stage. The warm orange of the setting sun heightens the effect, further blending the ochre before us.

The last time we played Timber Lanes in Maquoketa, IA was no exception. The late summer afternoon was working its magic on the crowd. We played in the evening, so there was a lot of time to kill during the day, hanging around, people watching. Bobbing along in the sienna seas was a vision in bright green. A shock of blonde hair exploded above a spectacularly tanned and fit body, which was more than enough to catch the eye even in the swaying chaos, but it was her dazzling, bright green top which absolutely made the case that there was Something To See here. We all remarked on her. We spoke of little else as the afternoon gave way to dusk.

Beyond the stunning visual she presented, it was clear her spirit was exceptional, too. She worked through the crowd all afternoon, seemingly knowing everyone in this small Iowa town. Contact with friends and acquaintances—a light touch on the arm as she threw her head back for that laugh which came so easily, and for the luckier among them, long embraces upon greeting. I jealously imagined what soft wonders that embrace might reveal.

We took the stage and, until she disappeared for good, we watched her weave through the crowd. As darkness set in, her shirt, nearly luminescent, stood out that much more. At some point near the end of the set we lost sight of her for the last time. There was some small amount of sadness, an emptiness remaining. Only her mysteries lingered, forever to be left unrevealed to us.

Or so we thought, until we found her passed out in a pool of her own vomit in the parking lot.

Back to Galway’s

The Recliners are very excited to be returning to the scene of our most facemelting, rippingest set ever:

Galway Bar & Grill
Elmhurst, IL 60126
Saturday, May 22, 9:30pm

(It’s just east of I-294. On our map it looks more like Westchester than Elhmurst, but who are we to quibble?) Anyway, the last time we played there we pretty much tore a hole in the space-time continuum and we expect no less this time out. Join us if you’re not afraid of a new black hole being created in the western suburbs.

Oops: Comments Disabled

There’s never a lack of drama on the internets, is there? We had a little problem with a spam attack over the weekend here at Club Recliner and since we don’t have a lot of time to moderate, etc., we decided to just shut them down. Sorry for the inconvenience, but it looks like no one but the spammer had availed themselves of that feature anyway.

I know it’s just like that thing in grammar school where the gym teacher would make everyone run laps if even one guy had socks that didn’t match, but them’s the breaks. Namaste. See you at Galway on Saturday!

New club: Galway Bar & Grill

We’ve really enjoyed our time off over the holidays. It’s always good to build unbridled rage recharge the creative spirit by spending time with family.

With this lengthy separation, we haven’t really had a chance to chat about some important milestones. Gary and John Recliner are each a year older since last we spoke, and we’ve crossed the three year anniversary of the 2007 Recliners Reunion Tour. Tempus fugit! Not only are we eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we will soon be eligible for Medicare and AARP discounts at Denny’s. Win-win-win.

For now, though, it’s time to rise out of our rocking chairs and do some work that requires no hearing aids. We’re talking about our debut performance at the spacious Galway Bar & Grill in leafy Elmhurst. Details:

Galway Bar & Grill
Saturday, February 13, 9pm
12045 West Roosevelt Road
Elmhurst, IL 60126
(708) 449-8830

We really hope you can make it. We’re also working on a ton of bookings for spring and summer right now, both here and in our second home in the Quad Cities. Stay tuned!

Welcome to the new site!

After months of hard labor and profound internet dark wizardry, not to mention the settlement of no less than four (4) international intellectual property cases argued before the Hague, we are thrilled to present the launch of the NEW Recliners Website, therecliners.org!

We’re excited to be using technology from the good folks at Tumblr. It’s a microblogging site designed to be super easy to update, which is good because if we’re going to be honest with each other, the old Recliners site sometimes had that not-so-fresh feeling about it. If you are already a Tumblr user, please consider following! If not, you can add this site to your RSS reader like any other blog or if you have no idea what the hell any of this mumbo-jumbo means, just bookmark it and check back often. We’ll try to get to updating it more than once per geologic era, we swear.

We’d love your feedback on it, too. Drop us a note at info@therecliners.org to let us know what you think or use the comments feature.

We’re taking a little time off over the holidays, but we’re working on winter bookings right now and we will announce them here (in addition to the email blast) when they firm up. You can check the calendar, or maybe just hang out in bars on the south side until we show up if you have time on your hands and a healthy liver.

Cheers!

Gary, John, Thom, and Todd Recliner
